Citizenship by notification for children with a Norwegian father – documentation requirements


Children under the age of 18 with a Norwegian father and a foreign mother are on certain conditions eligible for Norwegian citizenship, please read more at ‘How do I give notification of Norwegian citizenship?

Documentation of paternity is required.

A birth certificate is not accepted as documentation.

Children born in Denmark, Finland, Iceland or Sweden:

Documentation that paternity is set by court or by other means is required.

Children born in other countries:

  • It is required to document that paternity is set according to the national law of the relevant country
  • If paternity is set by other means, documentation that this is approved by NAV is required (before July 1st 2006: Rikstrygdeverket). 

When paternity or co-maternity may be established in Norway

When any of the parties have connections with foreign countries paternity and co-maternity may be established in Norway

  • if the mother was resident in Norway when the child was born;
  • if the child has later taken up residence in Norway, and the mother or the guardian of the child wishes to have paternity established here; or
  • if the putative father is resident in Norway.
