Children under the age of 18 with a Norwegian father and a foreign mother

Children under the age of 18 with a foreign mother, who is not married to the father of the child, may be granted Norwegian citizenship by notification if the father was Norwegian at the time the child was born. If the father was dead when the child was born, it is a requirement that he was a Norwegian citizen at the time he died. The person(s) with parental custody has to submit the form GP-7101 B (only available in Norwegian), and children above the age of 12 needs to give a written approval. The notification is sent to the local police or the nearest Norwegian foreign service mission in case the child resides abroad.

Adopted children between the ages of 12 and 18

Children between the age of 12 and 18 who are adopted by a Norwegian citizen after October 1st 1999, but before September 1st 2006, may become Norwegian citizen by notification. The parent(s) with the custody rights have to submit the form mentioned above. The child needs to give a written approval. The notification is sent to the local police, or the nearest Norwegian foreign service mission if the child resides abroad.

PS! According to the current rules, children under the age of 18 who are adopted by a Norwegian citizen acquire citizenship by birth. Children under the age of 18 who are adopted by a Norwegian citizen also acquire citizenship automatically if the advance approval has been given by Norwegian authorities. The information above therefore applies to children born before September 1st 2006 only.
