Release from Norwegian Citizenship by application

You may apply to be released from your Norwegian citizenship.

The conditions for your application to be granted, are that you:

  • Live in another country and has another citizenship
  • Live in Norway, has another citizenship, and it is considered to be unreasonable to deny you the right to be released, or
  • Live outside Norway and it is necessary for the acquisition of another citizenship that you are released from Norwegian citizenship. In the decision of the release, there will be set a deadline for when you must have acquired another citizenship. If you have not acquired another citizenship before the deadline, you will not be regarded as released, and will continue to be a Norwegian citizen.

There is no specific application form. It is sufficient that you write a letter to the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration. If you live abroad, you need to deliver the letter to the nearest Norwegian foreign service mission (embassy or general consulate). If you live in Norway, you need to deliver the letter to your local police office.

You need to document which of the abovementioned conditions are met. If you live in Norway, you need to give information of why you feel it will be unreasonable to deny you to be released from Norwegian citizenship.
