Visiting family members living in Norway

If you wish to visit your boyfriend/girlfriend or a family member living in Norway, there are two important things you need to establish: whether you need a residence permit, and whether you need a visa.

Visitor’s visa

Many people need a visa to enter Norway. An overview of who is subject to this requirement is available on the page Who needs a visa?. A visa is valid for up to 90 days. How to apply for a visitor’s visa is described on the page How do I apply for a visa?.

Residence permit

If you wish to stay in Norway for more than three months, you must apply for a residence permit. Information about how to apply is available on the page about work and residence.

In some cases, you can be granted a permit to live permanently with your family in Norway. Read more about this on the page about family immigration.

If you are going to visit your own children living in Norway, you may in some cases apply for a residence permit that is valid for up to nine months. Read more about the requirements for being granted such a residence permit on the page about parental permits.

If you wish to marry your boyfriend/girlfriend living in Norway, you can read more about the criteria for this on the page about fiancé permits.

As an EU/EEA/EFTA national, you can also be granted right of residence in Norway pursuant to the EEA Regulations.
