You will be offered free legal assistance if your application for protection is rejected.
You will receive information and guidance from the Norwegian Organisation for Asylum Seekers (NOAS) after you have applied for protection (asylum) in Norway and while you wait to be interviewed by the Directorate of Immigration (UDI).
If the UDI rejects your application for protection, you will be offered a certain number of hours of free legal assistance in order to appeal. The number of hours depends on, among other things, the applicant's country of origin and whether the application is processed pursuant to the Dublin regulations.
You can read more about this under Case processing of applications for protection.
The UDI operates its own legal assistance scheme with Norwegian lawyers who wish to assist asylum seekers. These lawyers have broad legal experience and expertise in refugee and asylum law. The UDI tries to find a lawyer based near you. If you want a lawyer of a particular gender, we will try to accommodate your wishes. During the asylum interview, you can request a particular lawyer if you so wish. You are entitled to use another lawyer than the one provided by the UDI if this does not delay the processing of your case. If you want a lawyer who is not part of the UDI legal assistance scheme, you will have to pay any extra expenses resulting from this.
If the UDI grants you a residence permit, no lawyer will be provided. The police where you live shall inform you of the decision.
