What happens if the travel document is lost?
You must immediately report if your Norwegian travel document is missing. When the travel document is missing or damaged, the UDI has to consider whether you fulfil the conditions for a new one.
When you have been granted a Norwegian travel document, you are obliged to store the document in a manner that prevents it coming into the possession of unauthorised persons. When a travel document is lost, or you for other reasons no longer are in possession of the travel document, you are obliged to immediately notify the nearest police station or the nearest Norwegian foreign service mission.
When you contact the police/a Norwegian foreign service mission and report that your travel document is missing, you must submit a detailed statement describing when, where and how the travel document was lost or otherwise misplaced. In the statement, you shall account for your travel activity in the period in which you have been in possession of the travel document. This detailed statement comes in addition to completion of
a form for the missing travel document.
If your travel document is missing, damaged or unsuitable for further use, the UDI has to consider whether you fulfil the conditions for a new travel document. Therefore it is the UDI that will process and make a decision on your application for renewal of the travel document. You can find information about the estimated case processing time on the
UDI's website.
