Skilled workers
There are different types of permits for skilled workers. You must have specialist training corresponding to upper secondary education level, hold a craft certificate, have completed a university college or university education or degree, or have special qualifications.
Unskilled workers
These permits are options for unskilled workers, meaning that the position in question does not require you to be a skilled worker.
Specialist - residence permit as a specialist has been repealed
The rule on specialists was repealed on 15 January 2013, and you can no longer get a first time residence permit as a specialist. This also applies if you submitted your application before 15 January 2013.
If you already have a residence permit as a specialist, you can get a renewed residence permit, provided that you are going to work for the same employer, for more information see
specialist - renewal. Your annual salary must be at least NOK 500,000.
Russian nationals living in the Barents Region
Certain types of residence permits can be granted if you are a Russian national living in the Barents Region.
Students and researchers
Special rules apply for students, trainees and researchers.
Cultural/non-profit purposes and exchange programmes
Residence permits may be granted for various cultural and non-profit purposes and for participation in exchange programmes.
Diplomats
Special rules apply for diplomats and members of their families.
