Work on the continental shelf

If you are a skilled worker who is going to work on the Norwegian continental shelf, you can be granted a residence permit. It is a requirement that you are going to work on a Norwegian or foreign fixed installation that is used on the Norwegian continental shelf.

Who needs a residence permit to work on the continental shelf?

Not everyone needs a residence permit to work on the continental shelf. You need a residence permit if you are going to work on a Norwegian or foreign fixed installation that is used on the Norwegian continental shelf. The granting of residence permits is subject to the requirements that apply to skilled workers

Who does not need a residence permit to work on the continental shelf?

Technical experts who are going to perform maintenance on or inform about the use of machinery or technical equipment do not need residence permits if the employment relationship is shorter than three months.

Nor do you need a residence permit if you are going to work on a Norwegian or foreign mobile installation on the continental shelf. Note that a mobile installation that is tied to a fixed installation or has entered a fixed production phase is considered to be a fixed installation. You therefore need a residence permit to work there.

If you are going to work on a fixed installation on the Norwegian continental shelf, there are some general rules that may exempt you from the residence permit requirement.

Even if you are among those who do not need a residence permit to work on the continental shelf, your employer is obliged to notify the police of the employment relationship before you enter Norway. When you have entered Norway, you are obliged to register with the police before you start working and no later than one week after you have entered the country. If you are covered by a visa requirement, you must apply for a visa before you enter Norway or the Schengen area.
