Press release from the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI): UDI upholds visa revocation

- A visa cannot be granted when there is reason to doubt the information given, or the stated purpose of the visit. In the case of Shah Mohammar Rais such doubt has been raised, and that is the reason for the revocation notification. We cannot see that our doubts have been dispelled in this case.  UDI will therefore uphold the decision about revoking the visa that has been granted, says Deputy Head of Department in UDI Morten Hansen.

The Norwegian Embassy in Islamabad granted Shah Mohammad Rais a visa on October 21. The stated purpose of the visit was to do some research for a book he is writing, and to meet with his Norwegian lawyers. The decision to issue the visa was made by UDI.

Since then doubts have been raised about the real purpose of his visit to Norway, and the visa has been revoked. Rais has told both the press and the Norwegian Embassy in Islamabad that he is considering applying for asylum in Norway.

If the Norwegian authorities have reason to believe that you want to remain in Norway beyond the period for which you are applying for a visa, your application may be rejected. Based on the recent information in this particular case, UDI finds reason to question the complainant’s intentions to return to his country of origin.

UDI therefore upholds its decision of November 3. regarding the revocation of the visa granted the Afghan citizen Shah Mohammad Rais.
