The new regulations apply to foreign nationals from non-EU/EEA countires, who have been granted resident permit  to study at a university or high school in Norway.

The new regulations which came into effect from the 23. May 2007, make it easier for students to get permits in order to work part-time besides their studies. The most important changes are:

  • Students do no longer need to apply for part-time work permits neither for first time application for resident permit nor the renewal of a permit. The application for resident permit and part-time work permit are processed as one application and the students are granted automatic part-time work permit together with the resident permit.
  • A part-time work permit is automatically granted along with the first time residence permit. This part-time work permit entitles the holder to work up to 20 hours per week and full-time in holidays.
  • Students no longer need to have a concrete offer of employment to apply for a part-time work permit.
  • When applying for a renewal the students must submit a  statement of study progression from the institution of study where the instituon states whether the applicant ought to be given a permit to work part-time and to what extent.
  • The students no longer have to pay a fee when they apply for a part-time work permit. This is now considered as part of the application for a student resident permit.
