Release from citizenship within one year

If you wish to become a Norwegian citizen it is required as a principal rule that you renounce or be released  from any other citizenship. You will be notified after we have processed your application, if you need to be released from your citizenship or not. It is your responsibility to take the steps required for a release within one year.

As a rule, Norwegian legislation requires that you release yourself from or renounce your previous citizenship.

The deadline for submitting documentation from public authorities regarding such a release is one year after you have been notified by the UDI.

Some countries are somewhat reluctant to grant release from citizenship. For example, you may need a permit to settle abroad before a release is granted. It consequently rests with you to take the steps required for obtaining citizenship release within the deadline of one year.
