If you live in Norway and your residence permit is about to expire, you should apply for a renewal at least one month before it expires.
What are my rights if I apply at least one month before the permit expires?
As a main rule, you will have the same rights with regards to working, studying etc. while you are waiting for us to process your applications, even if your permit expires before you have received an answer from us.
However, if your permit expires before you have received an answer from us, and you travel outside Norway, you might have problems coming into other Schengen countries or into Norway again.
Therefore, if you are planning to travel outside Norway around the time your residence permit expires, you should apply for a renewal of your permit as soon as possible.

What will happen if I do not apply at least one month before the permit expires?
If you apply for a renewal of your permit less than one month before it expires, you can still stay in Norway while you wait for an answer from us regarding your application.
However, you will not automatically be entitled to work, study etc. during the waiting period.
Norwegian travel documents
If you have a Norwegian refugee travel document or immigrant's passport, please check that it is valid for the dates you wish to travel abroad. If not, you must apply for a renewal as soon as possible.
Please note that the country you wish to visit might have specific rules regarding how long your travel document must be valid for. For example, in some countries travel documents have to be valid for 6 months after your planned return date. For information about this, please contact the embassy of the country you wish to visit.
If you wish to apply for an immigrant's passport for a single journey, for example for a child taking part in a school trip or a sports tournament abroad, you must apply for this as soon as you find out about the trip.
