Because of the turbulent and unpredictable situation in Syria in spring 2011, the UDI decided on 28 April 2011 to stop processing asylum applications from Syria until further notice. The UDI now recommends that the processing of these cases be resumed. The UDI is awaiting feedback from the ministry, and we will provide further information once a decision has been made.
At present, it is highly uncertain how conditions in Syria will develop. If case processing is resumed, the UDI will consider each application on a concrete and individual basis, and we will monitor developments in Syria closely.
Asylum seekers from Syria who have had their applications rejected still do not have a duty to return, and none of them will be forcibly returned.
