What does the case-processing times mean?

The case-processing times given here are the time we used to process most cases within the different categories, which means that many will have a shorter case-processing time than the ones given above.

The case-processing times are not guarantees, but our expectation about how long the applicants must wait for the decision, based upon our experience with applications from different countries.

The case-processing time is calculated from the day you submit your application to the police or at a Norwegian embassy or consulate, until the day the UDI makes a decision in the case.

Cases with DNA-examinations and interviews take up to a year

It is our experience that applicants from some countries lack documents with a sufficient quality for the UDI to make a decision. Some cases are also more difficult than others. In such cases we have to examine the identity and the family relationships closer. This can be done by for example DNA-examinations or by requesting the person living in Norway to an interview at the police.  In some types of cases, all below the age of 25 are requested for an interview with the police. In such cases expected case-processing time will rise to 9 or 12 moths.

Which cases takes longer time?

If the following applies to your case, your case-processing time will be longer than what is stated on this page (applies to both new and old cases).

  • DNA-examinations and examinations of documents are needed. It is UDIs experience that this is needed more often by applicants from some countries than others. Read more about this
  • The application lacks documents. See UDIs checklist and learn about the requirements from the Norwegian embassy or consulate in the country you are applying from.
  • The UDI is waiting for respond from the police or embassy concerning an interview or document examination. The person in Norway / you will be contacted if an interview is necessary.
  • We must assess whether the reality of the marriage.
  • The person in Norway is waiting for his/her permit.
  • The person in Norway has an open expulsion case.
  • There is doubt whether other requirements are met.
