First time applications
The time to process a case is calculated from the day you submit your application to the police or the embassy or consulate, until the day the UDI reaches a decision in the case.
UDI aims to process applications for study permits before the start of the academic year. It is important to enclose all necessary documentation with the application. Applications from which important information is missing, or when we doubt that the conditions are fulfilled, will take longer to process.
The numbers below show estimated case-processing times for most of the cases. The case-processing times may differ within a period, and information about this is updated every second month.
If you start studying in January/ August, you should apply already in October/ May.
Renewals
The police process most of the renewals of study permits. If an application is submitted without sufficient documentation, or if the police doubt if the conditions are fulfilled, the case is forwarded to the UDI.
If you apply for a renewal of your permit at latest one month before your present permit expire, you still have legal right to study and work part time.
