Diplomats etc. do not need residence permits. You must be registered and accepted by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or another Norwegian authority, if applicable.
Diplomats etc.
You do not require a residence permit if you are:
- affiliated with a diplomatic or paid consular mission (representations) and seconded for a period of service in Norway
- employed by or commissioned to do work for inter-state organisations or for bodies acting under convention
- in the private service of a person as mentioned above
- a member of the support staff of a diplomatic or consular mission and seconded for a period of service in Norway
You must be registered and accepted by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or another Norwegian authority, if applicable.
You cannot be granted a permit for other work in addition to this.
Spouses, cohabitants and dependent children of diplomats etc.
Right to residence
You do not need a residence permit to stay in Norway for more than three months without taking up employment if you are the spouse, cohabitant or dependent child of a person who is:
- affiliated with a diplomatic or paid consular mission
- employed by or commissioned to do work for inter-state organisations or bodies acting under convention.
You must be registered and accepted by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or another Norwegian authority, if applicable.
Right to work
If you wish to work or engage in business activities in Norway, you need a residence permit that entitles you to do so. You must submit applications for such permits to the police where you live. The UDI has power of decision in such matters.
You must enclose a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs documenting your status and that the state or organisation that seconded you has waived your immunity for matters relating to the work or assignment.
Spouses, cohabitants and children of support staff etc.
If strong humanitarian considerations so indicate, you can be granted a residence permit if you are the spouse, cohabitant or child of:
- a person in the private service of a diplomat
- a member of the support staff of a diplomatic on consular mission
