How to use the checklist

Underneath is a list of the documents you need to submit when you apply for family immigration. Some of the documents you the applicant have to get and others the reference person need to get.

Sign the last page.
You as the applicant should then submit this checklist, the questionnaire and copies of all the relevant documents in person. You must also bring the original documents.

On this page, we use the words 'reference person' and 'applicant'

The reference person = the family member living in Norway.
The applicant = the person who wants to move to Norway or continue living here and who needs a residence permit

Application documents

The signature form is the attachment you received via email when you registered your application online. Please print it and bring it with you. If you are handing in your application at a Danish embassy, please bring a filled-out application form instead. (www.udi.no/forms)

Identity documents for the applicant

If you hand in your application in Norway, you normally only need to show your passport and hand in the copies.
If you hand in your application abroad, you must normally hand in both your passport and the copies. If you need your passport back before you receive an answer to your application, please contact the place where you hand in the application.

A reference person who is registered as unmarried in the Norwegian population register does not need to submit confirmation of marital status or notarially certified self-declaration.

if the applicant or the reference person has been married before: divorce certificate or death certificate. As a main rule the divorce should be registered in the same country as the marriage was entered into View explanationHide explanation

Some reference persons must provide additional documentation on divorce:

You who are the reference person, must provide documentation from the country in which you previously married indicating that your previous marriage has been dissolved there if:

you have previously been married to a person from the same country as the applicant, and
your former spouse received a residence permit for family immigration with you

As documentation that previous marriages have been dissolved abroad, the UDI accepts:

Divorce certificate or annulment certificate in the former spouse's home country or from the country where you and your previous spouse were married, or
documentation from the former spouse's home country or the country where you and your former spouse married, showing that it is impossible to divorce or annul the marriage

If you cannot obtain documentation from abroad that your previous marriage is dissolved there, you must write an explanation the applicant can provide.

If relevant, final decision of separation

Documents to prove that the reference person is divorced from the previous marriage abroad

This requirement applies only if the reference person has previously been married to a person from the same country as you, AND the previous spouse received a residence permit for family immigration with the reference person.

Suppose this applies to the reference person in your case. In that case, you must provide documentation that the previous marriage of the reference person's previous marriage is dissolved aborad, even if it is registered dissolved in Norway.

if the reference person was married in the home country of the previous spouse: divorce certificate or annulment certificate from the country where the reference person and the previous spouse were married

if the reference person was married in another country than the country the previous spouse is a citizen of: Divorce certificate or annulment certificate to the reference person both from the home country of the previous spouse and from the country where the reference person and the previous spouse were married

if the reference person was married in the home country of the previous spouse: Provide documentation from the home country of the previous spouse to explain why the reference person can't divorce or annul the marriage
if the reference person was married in another country than the country the previous spouse is a citizen of: Provide documentation from the previous spouse’s home country and from the country where they married to explain why the reference person can't get a divorce or an annulment of the marriage
if the previous marriage of the reference person is not registered in the previous spouse’s home country: Provide documentation showing that the reference person is not registered as married with the authorities of the previous spouse’s home country

if relevant, a written explanation as to why you cannot present one or more of the documents mentioned above

If you have or are expecting a joint child

birth certificate for your child, or

documentation of pregnancy, for instance a confirmation from a doctor

if relevant, a written explanation as to why you cannot present one or more of the documents mentioned above

If you do not have, nor are expecting, a joint child

documentation showing that you have lived together the last two years, for instance tenancy agreement, sales contract or a registration of residence

if relevant, a written explanation as to why you cannot present one or more of the documents mentioned above

Documentation of the income of the reference person (please choose the cathegory which is relevant for the reference person)

You must document that the reference person has an income of at least

NOK 320 274 per year pre-tax

now. In addition, the reference person’s income last year must have been at about the same level. The reference person cannot have received any financial assistance from NAV (økonomisk sosialhjelp) during the last 12 months. Please check the income requirements, what kind of income that counts and whether you can be exempted from any of the requirements at www.udi.no/incomerequirement.

Documents you must hand in if the reference person works

contract of employment or a confirmation from the employer View explanationHide explanation

In the contract/confirmation it must be clear how long the employment will last and the scope (full time or part-time) of the employment. If your work is temporary, you should enclose a confirmation from your employer if it is possible to prolong your contract.

if the reference person has been a student at the university or university college level, please enclose documentation of the reference person having accumulated at least 60 credits (or the equivalent) in the year of the latest tax assessment notice . If the sponsor has been a vocational tertiary student (i.e. student above secondary/high school), please enclose a written confirmation that the education was completed within the prescribed time in the year of the latest tax settlement notice.

if the reference person has completed their national military service in the year of the previous tax assessment notice, please hand in documentation which shows this.

if relevant, a written explanation as to why you cannot present one or more of the documents mentioned above

Documents you must hand in if the reference person receives benefits from NAV

decision from NAV which includes information regarding the size and duration of the benefit

if relevant, a written explanation as to why you cannot present one or more of the documents mentioned above

Documents you must hand in if the reference person is self-employed (sole proprietorship)

a confirmation that your firm is properly registered in Norway

if you have an accountant: Confirmation from your accountant showing the profits of your company after the last tax year

tax return with all the necessary supporting documents (income statement etc.)

if the reference person has completed their national military service in the year of the previous tax assessment notice, please hand in documentation which shows this.

if relevant, a written explanation as to why you cannot present one or more of the documents mentioned above

Documents you must hand in if they apply to the reference person’s current situation

documentation on fixed periodic income, such as insurance payments, private pension schemes or rental income

confirmation of participation in the introduction programme, and information about the duration of the introduction programme.

decision regarding loans and/or grants received in connection with studies. It should be documented which period is covered by the payments (the entire school year or parts thereof).

documentation on income abroad if the reference person is a Norwegian citizen, a citizen of one of the Nordic countries, or holds a permanent residence permit (settlement permit) in Norway and has worked abroad View explanationHide explanation

The reference person must have earned at least

NOK 320 274 per year pre-tax

if relevant, a written explanation as to why you cannot present one or more of the documents mentioned above

Documentation of the requirement for four years full time work or studies (the four year requirement)

You only need to meet this requirement if

you do not have children together, and have been living together for less than two years, or
you have children together, but the children were conceived after the reference person moved to Norway. (You do not need to fulfill the requirement if the child was conceived while you both had residence permits in Norway), and
the reference person is not a Norwegian citizen, and came to Norway as a resettlement refugee, an asylum seeker, through family immigration, or was given a residence permit on the grounds of strong humanitarian considerations or a particular connection to Norway

Documentation which shows that the reference person has been in full time work or education in Norway for four years

contract of employment or a confirmation from the employer(s)

tax assessment notice

confirmation/certificate or diploma from the school or place of study

confirmation of participation in the introduction programme

confirmation from NAV of your participation in the qualification programme

decision on disability pension or retirement pension

If you already are in Norway, and wish to hand in your application in Norway

Please note! You do not have to hand in any documentation to show that you have the right to hand in your application in Norway if you

- have a residence permit in Norway, or
- do not need a visa to visit Norway and have been here for less than 90 days when you hand in the application to the police, or
- have applied for asylum and are waiting for an answer. Please note! If you have received a rejection from the UDI, your request to stay in Norway until you have received an answer to your appeal cannot have been rejected.

If you are in Norway on a visitor’s visa (Schengen visa), you must hand in the following documents:

If you have completed an education or a degree at an university college or university, or have completed a vocational training programme at upper secondary school level, you must submit a diploma and transcripts showing how long the education lasted, the level and the content.
If you have taken education which you have not completed, you must hand in documentation which shows how long the education lasted, the level and the content.

If you have previously handed in this documentation to the UDI, you do not have to hand it in again.

and/or documentation of your work experience View explanationHide explanation

Work certificates: You must provide work certificates from previous employers that contain detailed information about:
how long you worked there,
what training you received,
what work tasks you had and
what qualifications you have.

Courses: If you have courses in the profession, you can attach documentation to this as a supplement to the work certificates. The documentation must contain information about the duration/number of hours and the content of the courses.

You only need to document work experience in addition to, or instead of, documentation of education if the work experience should be part of the assessment of whether or not you are a skilled worker.

if you are not a skilled worker: documents which show that there are very special circumstances which means that you must hand in the application in Norway, for example a medical certificate

Originals and copies of the documents

Requirements for documents from Norway

You do not need to bring originals of documents from Norwegian authorities. You are only to hand in a copy of the document. The copy does not need to be stamped.

Requirements for documents from other countries than Norway

You must bring the original documents and your passport. If you apply from Norway, you must present the original documents and your passport. If you apply from abroad, you must submit the original documents and your passport. These documents will be checked by the embassy and will be returned to you at the same place as you submitted the application.
The original documents from your home country must be legalised by the foreign authority. You can contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or equivalent in your home country to get information about how to get your documents legalised. No legalisation of your passport is required.
You must also bring copies of all the documents and your passport.
- If you hand in your application abroad, the copies must be stamped by the authorities in your country, or by a notarius publicus.
- If you hand in your application to the police in Norway you do not need to have the copies stamped (neither the copies of your documents, nor the copies of your passport).
If your documents are in a different language than Norwegian or English, they must be translated to Norwegian or English by an authorised/certified translator. It must be stated on the translation who translated the document and when.
You must also hand in a copy of the translations. If you hand in your application abroad, the copy of the translation must be stamped by the authorities in your country, or a notarius publicus.
