Changes in the return program to Ethiopia (ARE)

The ARE-program gives you cash and support for reintegration in the form of help to start a business or vocational training. To return to Ethiopia with support from the return program to Ethiopia (ARE), you must apply before 15 August 2017.

Published: 12.05.2017

You have the possibility to apply for assisted return. If you apply by 15 August 2017, you can receive the ARE-support. If you apply after 15 August 2017, you will receive less support for return. This is because the ARE-program is being suspended.

This is what you will receive if you apply for assisted return before 15 August

  • You will receive NOK 15 000 in cash.
  • Support to establish a business or get vocational training for the value of NOK 30 000.
  • You will receive these sums even if you apply after your deadline for leaving Norway.

For example, a family with the children under the age of 18 will receive this in return support through the ARE-program:

All the sums added together

NOK 225 000

  • You will receive NOK 5 000 extra if you have a valid passport when you apply. If you are a family applying, you will get NOK 5 000 per person who has a valid passport.
  • Families with children who apply before their deadline to leave Norway, will receive NOK 10 000 extra per child.

This is what you will receive if you apply for assisted return after 15 August

If you apply after 15 August 2017, you will only receive the support for return which applies to other countries (FSR support). This means that:

  • If you apply before your deadline to leave Norway, you will receive NOK 20 000. Families with children will receive NOK 10 000 extra per child.
  • If you apply after your deadline to leave Norway, you will receive NOK 7 000 per adult, and NOK 2 000 per child. You will not receive any extra support for children.

For example, a family with the children under the age of 18, who apply after their deadline to leave Norway, will receive this in return support:

You must travel to Ethiopia by 15 October

Please make a note of these deadlines:

  • 15 August: Deadline for applying for return through the ARE-program
  • 15 October: Deadline for travelling to Ethiopia and receiving ARE-support
  • 15 November: Deadline for receiving reintegration support through the project office in Addis Abeba

If you haven’t travelled to Ethiopia by 15 October, you will lose the ARE support. When you apply for return, you can get help to obtain travel documents. Obtaining travel documents takes time. Therefore, it is important that you apply for assisted return through the ARE program as early as possible.
