The UDI renews cooperation with IOM regarding support for assisted return to Afghanistan


Those who return to Afghanistan through the programme for assisted return will now receive cash payments through the IOM. The scheme includes adults, families and unaccompanied minors.

Who can apply for assisted return to Afghanistan?

You can apply for support for returning to Afghanistan if you have citizenship or a residence permit there, and you either:

  • are staying in Norway without legal residence
  • have received a rejection to your application for protection (asylum)
  • are waiting for a decision on your application for protection (asylum)
  • have received a rejection to your application for another type of residence permit

What kind of support will you be given? 

You can get

  • advice and help in getting passport/travel documents from the IOM
  • plane tickets
  • financial support

Financial support

You have to apply early to receive as much financial support as possible. 

  • If you apply before your deadline for leaving the country has expired, or before you are given a deadline for leaving, you will receive a total of NOK 20,000 in cash through the IOM.  You will receive NOK 10 000 when you arrive in Afghanistan and NOK 10 000 after three months. In addition to this, you will get a payment of NOK 2 000 when you arrive in Kabul, which you can spend on temporary accommodation and transport to your final destination in Afghanistan, if relevant.
  • If you apply after your deadline for leaving the country has expired, you will receive a total of NOK 15 000 in cash through the IOM. You will receive NOK 10 000 when you arrive in Afghanistan and NOK 5 000 after three months. In addition to this, you will get a payment of NOK 2 000 when you arrive in Kabul, which you can spend on temporary accommodation and transport to your final destination in Afghanistan, if relevant.
  • If you are an unaccompanied minor, the cash payment is a total of NOK 42 000. You will receive NOK 12 000 when you arrive in Afghanistan, NOK 10 000 after two months, NOK 10 000 after four months and the final NOK 10 000 after six months. In addition to this, you will get a payment of NOK 2 000 when you arrive in Kabul, which you can spend on temporary accommodation and transport to your final destination in Afghanistan, if relevant. NOK 10 000 in cash for caregivers in Afghanistan if they cooperate for assisted return.
  • If you qualify for the vulnerable migrant programme, the cash payment is a total of NOK 42 000. You will receive NOK 12 000 when you arrive in Afghanistan, NOK 10 000 after two months, NOK 10 000 after four months and the final NOK 10 000 after six months. In addition to this, you will get a payment of NOK 2 000 when you arrive in Kabul, which you can spend on temporary accommodation and transport to your final destination in Afghanistan, if relevant.

  • You must create a user account and fill in the UDI's application form for assisted return. 
  • IOM, the asylum reception centre where you live and the UDI regional office can help you with applying.
