Marriages of convenience (proforma marriage)

If the main reason for someone getting married or engaged is that he or she wants to come to Norway, this is called a marriage of convenience.

If the main reason the applicant has married or become engaged is that he or she wants to come to Norway, this is called a marriage of convenience. (The 'applicant' is the person who wishes to be granted a residence permit in Norway)

Entering into such marriages is a criminal offence for both spouses.

In order to investigate whether a marriage is a marriage of convenience, we will, for example, check

  • how long you have been together
  • how much contact you have had
  • what you know about each other
  • the age difference
  • whether the marriage is uncommon in the applicant's culture
  • whether the applicant has previously applied for a residence permit in Norway or another country

If the UDI believes that the marriage is a marriage of convenience, the applicant's application will be rejected and he or she can be expelled from Norway and other Schengen countries for at least two years.
