If you are granted a residence permit

If your application for family immigration is accepted and you are granted a residence permit, the case officer will inform the police or embassy of this by e-mail.

The police or embassy will contact you

  • If you have applied from Norway, the police will contact you.
  • If you have applied through a Norwegian embassy, they will contact you
  • If you you have submitted the application to a Danish or Swedish embassy or consulate, the decision will be sent through a separate postal system and it will therefore take a few weeks before the embassy is informed about the UDI’s decision and they can contact you.
  • If you have given a person in Norway an authorisation in your case, he or she will also be informed about the decision.

The police or embassy will give you information about what happens next.

If you already are in Norway

If you are in Norway and have submitted the application to the police here, the police will contact you. You will make an appointment for a time when you can go to the police station and receive the decision and sticker in your passport which shows that you have a residence permit.

When can you travel to Norway?

If you are staying abroad, the embassy will contact you and arrange a date when you can come to the embassy and receive the letter containing the decision.

You must travel to Norway within six months from the day the UDI made its decision. If you do not need a visa to visit Norway you can travel here whenever you like within six months.

If you are a citizen of a country subject to a visa requirement, the embassy will give you a visa sticker in your passport that will enable you to travel to Norway. The visa sticker will state the latest date by which you must travel to Norway. This date may be less than six months from the decision date. You must therefore discuss with the embassy when it is convenient for you to collect the visa, based on when you plan to travel to Norway.

Read the decision carefully

You must read the letter containing the decision carefully. Among other things, the letter states how long your residence permit is valid for, and it contains important information about your rights and obligations.  It also contains information about when you must renew your permit.

When you arrive in Norway

When you arrive in Norway, you must contact the police where you live within seven days from the first day you entered the Schengen area. You will receive a new sticker in your passport that shows that you have a residence permit in Norway.

How long is the permit valid for?

The permit is valid for one to three years. If the person in Norway does not have a permanent residence permit nor is a Norwegian national, you will not be granted a permit that is valid for longer than the permit of the person in Norway. A permit to enter into marriage is valid for six months.

A Norwegian personal identity number

When you are granted a residence permit in Norway you can contact the Population register to get a Norwegian personal identity number. Read more about personal identity numbers on the population register’s websites.
