International companies

If you are employed by an international company, several types of residence permits may be relevant. Below is a list of your options.

If you have a Norwegian employer

  • If you are a skilled worker receiving payment from a Norwegian company that is part of an international group, you can apply for a residence permit as a skilled worker. The permit forms the basis for a permanent residence permit.
  • If your annual salary is NOK 500,000 or more, you can apply for a residence permit as a specialist. The permit as a specialist also forms the basis for a permanent residence permit, but you have to submit a new application if you want to change employers.
  • If you are taking a vocational education and are to work for a Norwegian company that is part of an international group, you can apply for a residence permit as a trainee (vocational training).

If you have a foreign employer with a Norwegian client

If you are employed by an international company abroad and have been given an assignment for a Norwegian company, you can apply for a residence permit as a seconded employee

The early employment scheme

You can enter Norway and start working before your application has been processed if your employer/client in Norway meets the criteria for and takes advantage of the early employment scheme.
