How do I renew my permit?
You register your application for a renewal of a permit through the online Application Portal Norway and book an appointment to hand in the necessary documentation to the local police. We cannot start processing your application until you have personally handed in your documentation.
If you are not able to use the Application Portal Norway, you fill out a
paper application form. Then you must call the
local police to find out where and when you can hand in the application and documents.
The police renew most types of permits. If the police are in doubt as to whether your application can be granted, they will forward it to the UDI for processing. The police cannot make decisions concerning rejections.
What must be enclosed with the application?
Both applicants who register their applications online and those who hand in a paper version need to bring your passport and other necessary documentation to the police station.
- If you apply online, you will at the same time book an appointment for handing in your documents to the police. You will not have to wait in line when you turn up for your appointment.
- If are not applying online you need to contact the embassy to find out when to hand in the documents along with the application form.
When you have handed in your passport and other necessary documentation we will start to process your application.
You need to hand in:
- a passport photo that meets certain requirements
- a photocopy of all pages in all travel documents/passports you have held in the past year
- you need to pay a fee (if you register your application through the Application Portal Norway you pay there, if not you pay to the police when you hand in the application)

When you apply to renew these kinds of permits, you must normally hand in the same documents as the first time you applied. You can find a list of which documents to hand in here:
When do I apply for a renewal?
If you apply for a renewal at least one month before your permit expires you will have the same rights with regards working, studying etc. while you are waiting for us to process your applications, even if your permit expires before you have received an answer from us.
Please note! The application is not officially submitted until you have handed in the supporting documents to the police. It is not sufficient that you have registered the application through the Application Portal Norway. There might be a waiting time of several weeks to get an appointment with the police. Therefore we recommend that you register your application online and book an appointment two to three months before your current permit expires.
If you fail to apply for a renewal within the deadline, you will not automatically be entitled to stay in Norway on the same terms during the waiting period.
If you apply for a renewal after your permit has expired, you will be without a valid permit while we process your application. Applying too late may also mean that your residence will not be considered continuous, which means that you may have to wait longer before you can be granted a
permanent residence permit (previously called a settlement permit).
How long does it take to process my renewal application?
The case processing time varies from police district to police district. If the police forward your application to the UDI for processing, you can find information about the expected case processing time at our website:

Are all permits renewable?
Some permits are of limited duration. They can only be renewed for a certain period of time. This applies e.g. if you are working as an au pair, a seasonal worker, a trainee or if you are a student at a folk high school.

Can I apply for a permanent residence permit?
With some kinds of permits you will after a period of minimum three years have the possibility of applying for a permanent residence permit. If you are going to apply for a permanent residence permit, you do not need to renew your current permit, but you must apply for a permanent residence permit at least one month before your current permit expires.
If you have received an email or text message reminder
If you have received an email or text message reminder concerning permit renewal, this means that you hold a permit that can be renewed. The reminder does not necessarily entail that you fulfil the requirements for a renewed permit.
It is primarily applicants who have previously registered their contact information in Application Portal Norway that will receive an email or text message. You are personally responsible for renewing your permit, regardless of whether you have received a reminder or not.
Please ignore this reminder if you have already registered an application for renewal via the internet, and have already booked an appointment for or presented documents.
The reminder is sent to the email address and/or mobile phone number registered in your previous application. If you are not the applicant himself/herself, but have nonetheless received a text message or email, the contact information may be changed directly in the renewal form in Application Portal Norway.
If you have received an F-code via email or text message
If you have received an email or text message with an F-code, you may renew your permit via the Fast track process. This will save time when registering your application, and you will only need to visit the police once.
You use the Fast track process by logging onto the Application Portal Norway and choose Use f-code.
If you have received an F-code after you have already applied for renewal, please ignore the e-mail/text message.
You must book an appointment with the police
You must book an appointment with the police when registering a Fast track renewal, in order to hand in documents. You should be aware that some police districts may have long waiting times to get appointments. We recommend that you register your application and book an appointment as soon as you have received an F-code.
If you have a Norwegian travel document
If you have a Norwegian travel document that must be renewed, you must register a separate application in Application Portal Norway. Click on Go to application forms in order to find the form.
Some applicants may apply for permanent residence
If you have not received an F-code, you must apply by the standard renewal process
You may only apply through the Fast track renewal process if you have received an F-code. If you have not received an F-code 75 days before your current permit expires, you must apply for a renewal through the regular procedure. You will find the correct form by choosing Go to application forms. The expiry date of your current residence permit is found on your residence card, or on the label in your passport. It is not possible to request an F-code by contacting the police or the UDI.
