How to renew your residence permit

This page contains general information about the renewal of permits.

Most residence permits are renewable. It is important that you apply on time. You should apply for a renewal one month before your permit expires at the latest.

For EEA nationals (all citizens of EU/ EEA/ EFTA countries) and their family members, separate schemes apply through the EEA Regulations.

How do I renew my permit?

Submit your renewal application to the police where you live. The police renew most types of permits. If the police are in doubt as to whether your application can be granted, they will forward it to the UDI for processing. The police cannot make decisions concerning rejections.

When do I apply for a renewal?

You should apply for a renewal at least one month before your permit expires. You will have the same rights as regards working, studying etc. while you are waiting for us to process your applications, even if your permit expires before you have received an answer from us.

If you fail to apply for a renewal within the deadline, you will not automatically be entitled to stay in Norway on the same terms during the waiting period.

If you apply for a renewal after your permit has expired, you will be without a valid permit while we process your application. Applying too late may also mean that your residence will not be considered continuous, which means that you may have to wait longer before you can be granted a permanent residence permit (previously called a settlement permit).

What must be enclosed with the application?

  • a passport photo that meets certain requirements
  • a copy of all pages in all travel documents you have held in the past year
  • an original receipt for fee paid
In addition, you must enclose documentation relating to the particular permit the application concerns.

How long does it take to process my renewal application?

The case processing time varies from police district to police district. If the police forward your application to the UDI for processing, you can find information about the expected case processing time at our website: www.udi.no/caseprosessing-times.

Are all permits renewable?

Some permits are of limited duration. They can only be renewed for a certain period of time. This applies e.g. if you are working as an au pair, a seasonal worker, a trainee or if you are a student at a folk high school.

More detailed information about renewals and the terms that apply to your permit is available at the website concerning the permit in question.
