Norway has entered into agreements with other Schengen countries (primarily Denmark and Sweden) that some of their foreign service missions will accept applications for visas and residence permits (that entitles the holder to work unless otherwise specified in the decision) on Norway’s behalf. In such case, the fees of the country that represents us apply. See the overview of countries and cities in which Norway is represented by other countries.
Who has to pay a fee?
The rules for who must pay a fee vary according to the type of permit concerned.
Residence permit and permanent residence permit (previously called settlement permit)
As a rule, all applicants must pay a fee. The following persons do not have to pay a fee:
- children who are younger than 18 when the application is submitted
- EEA nationals or their close family members who have right of residence or are applying for an EEA residence card
- asylum seekers applying for protection or a renewed permit
- victims of human trafficking who are applying for a residence permit (period of reflection)
- persons who are appealing a decision
- In certain cases, you do not have to pay a fee if you are an asylum seeker applying for a temporary work permit.
Family immigration
- You only pay a full fee the first time you apply for family immigration.
- When you apply for a renewal, the fee is reduced (see the table above). This also applies even if the basis for the application changes, for example if you have held a fiancé permit and then apply for family immigration with your spouse, or if you have held a permit for family immigration with your spouse and then apply for family immigration with your children.
- However, if you apply for a renewal after your permit has expired, you must pay a full fee.
Citizenship
Children under the age of 18 do not have to pay a fee when they apply for Norwegian citizenship. It is also free to give notification of Norwegian citizenship, to apply for retention of one’s Norwegian citizenship and to apply to be released from the Norwegian citizenship.
Immigrant’s passports and travel documents
The first time you are issued a travel document or an immigrant’s passport, it is free of charge. However, when you renew your travel document or immigrant’s passport, or you are issued a new travel document or immigrant’s passport, you must always pay a fee. This applies to both adults and children.
Visa
As a rule, all applicants must pay a fee. The following persons do not have to pay a fee:
- citizens of countries outside the EEA area who are closely related to an EEA national (EEA nationals and their close family members are free to enter Norway without a visa)
- children under the age of six
- pupils, students, university or university college level students or accompanying teachers when the purpose of the trip is educational or training
- researchers from countries outside the EEA area entering the Schengen area to carry out scientific research.
How do you pay the fee?
The fee must be paid on submission of the application, at the latest. In Norway, the application must be submitted to the police in the place you live. In cities, there is often a separate office you must go to. Contact the police for further information. In Oslo, the application must be submitted to Oslo police district in Schweigaards gate 15 B. If you submit the application from abroad, you pay the fee to the embassy or the consulate where you submit your application.
The fee can be paid in cash or with a payment card if you appear in person. In Norway, you can also pay the amount to the police in advance. If you live in Oslo, you can pay the amount to account number 7694 05 10755. If you do not live in Oslo, contact
the police where you live for information about which account number to use.
If you pay in advance, you must enclose the original receipt with your application. If you send the application in the post, you must also enclose the receipt.
You cannot send or submit an application directly to the UDI. If you do, it will be returned to you.
