Screening

Screening is carried out by the police and consists of gathering information on identity, security, health, and vulnerability.

Screening applies to third-country nationals who

  • lack lawful entry to the Schengen area and have not been through a regular border control, or
  • are residing illegally in Norway after entering unlawfully

An immigration case (such as an asylum application, a refusal of entry or stay, or an expulsion) can start at the same time as the screening.

Formally, the screening regulation (“screeningforordningen”) is integrated into Norwegian legislation as part of the EU Pact on Asylum and Migration.
