This applies regardless of the type of residence permit you are applying for, as long as you meet the requirements for applying from Norway. If you do not meet the requirements, you must submit your application at an embassy.
For example, you can apply for a residence permit for:
- work
- studies
- working holiday
- family immigration
What does this mean?
Being a skilled worker determines where you can submit your application from – not what type of residence permit you can apply for.
Requirements
To be able to submit the application in Norway, you must meet these three requirements:
- you can document that you are a skilled worker
- you have legal stay in Norway. This means that you either
- hold a residence permit in Norway, or
- already have a visa for Norway or another Schengen country, or
- do not need a visa to visit Norway and have been in the Schengen area for less than 90 days when you hand in the application to the police in person, or
- hold a residence permit in another Schengen country and have been in Norway for less than 90 days when you hand in the application to the police in person.
- you are not awaiting an answer on your application for protection (asylum) and your application for protection (asylum) has not been rejected.
As long as you met the requirements when you submitted your application to the police, you can stay in Norway while you wait for a response.
Important to know
If you are staying in Norway on a visitor visa or a visa-free period, you may lose the opportunity to travel further in the Schengen area because you use up the permitted period of stay.
