New case processing rules for collective protection and exemptions from the requirement for an asylum interview

The Storting has changed the regulations for persons from Ukraine applying for protection.

Published: 30.06.2026

No longer entitled to appeal the extension of collective protection

From 1 July 2026, you will no longer have the right to appeal if you are refused an extension of collective protection. This also applies if you have received a decision before 1 July stating that you have the right to appeal.

Exemptions from the requirement for an asylum interview

From 1 July, the UDI will no longer interview everyone from Ukraine who receives an individual assessment of protection.

What does this mean for you as an applicant for protection?

The information you provide to the police about why you are seeking protection in Norway will likely be the information we look at when we decide whether you are entitled to individual protection. If we need more information to be able to decide on your application, we will contact you.

Why do we no longer interview everyone who applies for individual protection?

The government has changed the regulations for individual protection. We no longer need to interview asylum seekers if:

  • the country information we have and the processing of previous cases show that there is a very high probability that the application will be rejected
  • we believe that we have enough information in your case to be certain of the outcome

This applies to the vast majority of applications for individual protection from Ukraine.
