On 24 June 2025, the Ministry of Justice and Public Security decided to suspend the processing of applications for protection from persons from Syria for up to six months.
This was due to the highly uncertain situation in Syria following the fall of the regime. The Ministry has now decided not to extend this suspension.
Like most other countries in Europe, Norway will now resume the processing of Syrian asylum applications.
UDI currently has just under 5,000 unprocessed applications, approximately half of which are from Syrian nationals.
UDI will begin interviewing Syrian applicants in January. However, because the situation in Syria has changed significantly, the cases will involve new information and new assessments. As a result, processing may take longer, especially in the initial phase. It may also take longer to receive a decision after the interview than has previously been the case.
