Losing norwegian citizenship

This information is aimed at persons who have Norwegian citizenship..

In some cases, UDI can decide to withdraw your citizenship. You are a Norwegian citizen until the decision is final in UDI or UNE. When UDI considers whether you should lose your citizenship, we always consider whether you can get a new residence permit.

Residence permits you had before you got Norwegian citizenship will not be returned to you when you citizenship has been withdrawn. This means that you will be considered as a foreigner again and lose your citizenship rights when the decision is final. If you have a right of residence under the EEA regulations, you will not lose this because your Norwegian citizenship is withdrawn. This also applies if you have a permanent right of residence according to the EEA regulations or if you are a citizen of another Nordic country.

When your citizenship has been withdrawn, it means that you are either not allowed to live in Norway anymore, or that you will receive a new residence permit after you have been deregistered as a Norwegian citizen in the National Register, and your stay in Norway will start to count again.
