When is my application considered submitted?
- When uploading the documents: We consider the application as submitted when you have paid the fee, uploaded your documents and submitted the application. If you do this no later than one month before your permit expires, you will retain your rights while you wait for a response to your application.
- When submitting the documents to the police: We consider the application as submitted when you show up at the agreed appointment at the police and submit your documents. If you do this no later than one month before your current residence permit expires, you have the same rights as your current permit.
- What happens to my rights if I apply for renewal but do not get an appointment with the police in time?
Who processes my application, and what does that mean for the processing time?
Most applications for renewal of a residence permit are processed by the police.
If the police have doubts about whether you meet all the requirements to renew your permit, and are therefore unsure whether they can decide the case, they must send the case to the UDI. Then the UDI processes it.
Waiting times
- The UDI often has longer processing times for applications for renewal of a family immigration permit than the police. You must therefore be careful to submit everything on the renewal checklist and ensure that you document that you meet all the requirements.

What if I have a reference person who also has a residence permit?
- If there are several of you who are renewing your residence permit, you may need to apply in different ways. In some applications, you can upload the documents digitally. In this case, you can submit both the application and your documents online before your appointment with the police.
- In other cases, the reference person, the family member living in Norway, must fill out a paper form or bring all documents with them to the police to apply. The application form will give you instructions on what to do.
Can I travel abroad?
- If you are going to travel outside Norway, you must have a valid passport and residence card. You may therefore have problems travelling in and out of Norway while you wait for your new permit.
- Travelling abroad: You need a valid residence card.
