Consultation in applications for a visitor visa

When citizens of certain countries apply for a visitor visa (Schengen visa), the application must be approved by all Schengen countries. This takes at least eight days.

If you are a citizen of one of the countries listed below, your application will undergo a consultation process, which involves each Schengen country vetting your application. This applies no matter where you currently live.

Once the embassy, consulate or UDI has considered your application, we send it to the other Schengen countries. We cannot finish processing your application until all these countries have approved it. This will take at least eight days.

This is a standard routine which has been in place for many years for all citizens of the countries on this list. It does not mean that there is anything wrong with your application.

If you are a citizen of one of these countries, you should apply well in advance. It will not be possible to have your application processed in fewer than eight days.

If you are visiting a family member who is life-threateningly ill, or if you will be attending the funeral of a close family member, and you cannot wait eight days, UDI may in certain cases issue you a visa which is only valid in Norway (this means it is not valid for any other Schengen country). You must have a medical certificate which shows that the person you are visiting is life-threateningly ill.
