National ID card

A national ID card is an identity card that you can use when you need to identify yourself.

Only Norwegian citizens will be able to apply for this for the time being, and it is voluntary to have a national ID card.

It is possible to get the national ID card with “the right to travel” so that you can use it as a travel document (in the same way as a passport) when you travel to the EEA countries and Switzerland.

According to the plan, it will be possible to apply for a national ID card from November 2020. You will be able to book an appointment with the police to apply for a national ID card when this is ready, in the same way as you apply for a passport.

See more information about national ID cards on the police website (external website) (content only in Norwegian).
