If your residence permit or visa has expired, you must return home now

Foreign nationals who could not return home before their permit, visa, or visa-free stay expired due to the corona situation must return home. Stays after the departure deadline may result in rejection of entry or expulsion.

During the period when the corona situation made it difficult to return to your home country, UDI did not deport foreign citizens who remained in Norway beyond the departure deadline in their permit or visa.

Now that it is practically possible to travel to most countries again, UDI will follow up cases where foreign citizens stay in Norway after their departure deadline.

UDI is aware that it's still difficult to travel to some countries.
Although it's possible to travel to most countries, there are some countries where returning is impossible at the time being.

If you have had problems leaving Norway, you must hold on to your documentation showing that you have tried to leave. You must present this documentation if a deportation- or expulsion case is created when leaving Norway. You will also need this documentation if you are applying for a visa to enter Norway later. Do not submit documentation to UDI now.

If it's impossible for you to obtain airline tickets, you should contact your country's embassy. UDI has information that some embassies arrange flights to help their residents get home.

You do not need to contact UDI. We cannot give you confirmation that you can stay in Norway. UDI will consider whether it has been possible to travel if an expulsion- or deportation case is opened.
