This is a new scheme from 5 May 2026. If you apply as an employee with an eID, you should register your application online, pay the fee and upload your documents online at the latest one month before your permit expires. You do not need to book an appointment and attend an appointment with the police, but in some cases the police may ask you to attend an appointment.
If you are over 18 and use an electronic ID (eID) to log in to our services, your application is considered submitted when you have paid the fee, uploaded all the required documents and submitted the electronic application form.
How to apply
- Choose which type of residence permit you want to renew and log in to UDI’s application portal using your eID when you fill in the electronic application form.
- Fill in the application form.
- Pay the application fee. You cannot get your money back after you have paid and submitted the application.
- Upload documents. After you have filled in the application, you will receive a list showing which documents you need to upload.
- When you have finished uploading the documents, select “Submit”. It is important that you upload all the required documents together with the application so that your application can be processed as quickly as possible. However, we recommend that you apply with an eID within one month before your permit expires even if you do not yet have all the documents when the deadline is approaching. You can submit additional documents here.
Your application is now submitted. If you do this at the latest one month before your permit expires, you keep your rights while you are waiting for a decision.
Do you need to attend an appointment with the police?
If you apply as an employee to renew your residence permit for work with an eID, you should not book an appointment with the police. In some cases, the police may ask you to attend an appointment. Your application was submitted when you uploaded the documents and selected “Submit”.
Remember that you must apply well in advance before your permit expires, latest one month before it expires, preferably two to three months in advance.
How to apply without an eID
If you do not have an eID, or if your employer applies on your behalf, you must
- choose which type of residence permit you want to renew and log in to UDI’s digital application solution with a username and password
- fill in and submit the electronic application form and pay the application fee
- attend an appointment with the police:
- if you apply as an employee, you must book an appointment with the police after you have filled in the application form and bring the documents on the checklist when you attend your appointment
- if your employer applies for you, they must submit the documents, and you must book an appointment with the police after the application has been processed
Your application is considered submitted when you have submitted all the documents to the police.
