I have applied for a permanent residence permit and have questions about renewal of my temporary residence permit. What happens while I wait?

The police may grant applications for a permanent residence permit. However, if the conditions are not met, or if it is unclear whether they are met, the police must send the application for a permanent residence permit to UDI.

If your application for a permanent residence permit is sent to UDI, the police will renew your temporary residence permit provided that the conditions for this permit are met. This is done so that you have a valid residence permit while you are waiting for your application for a permanent residence permit to be processed by UDI.

If the renewal granted by the police has expired, you may apply to renew your temporary residence permit again while you are waiting for a decision on your application for a permanent residence permit. We recommend that you do so if you need a new residence card as soon as possible, for example in connection with travel.
