Waiting times for a visitor visa
Most applications are processed by the embassy, either in the country you live in or in another country. If the embassy is in doubt about whether you can be granted a visa, they will send your application to UDI, and you will be notified by email or SMS.
We cannot give more information about the waiting time, even if you contact us. Fewer enquiries can help everyone get a decision faster.
| Application processed by | Waiting time |
|---|---|
| Embassy in your country of residence | 15 days |
| Embassy in another country | 15–29 days |
| Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) | 45 days |

Waiting times may change
We usually process the oldest application first. The waiting time is calculated from when you submit your application and documents at the police in Norway, or at a visa application centre/embassy abroad. Some applications take longer than others, so the waiting times are only a guide and cannot show exactly when you will get a decision.
This can affect the waiting time
The waiting time can be affected by:
- The number of applicants
- Changes in your situation
- Missing documents
- Additional investigations, such as DNA tests and interviews
- If you have a criminal record
If anything is missing in your application, we will contact you.

Appeal after receiving a rejection
If you have appealed a refusal, you will receive a decision within
5 months
after you submitted your visitor visa application at the application centre, embassy, or consulate.
-
What can I do to get a decision as quickly as possible?
You can make sure that:
- Your application is complete and correctly filled out
- All necessary documents are included
- Your and your sponsor’s contact information is correct and up to date.
- The person inviting you has your authorisation so that we can send important messages to them
-
Can I request priority?
Very few applications can be prioritised. To request priority, you must send us
- a detailed explanation
- documentation, such as a medical certificate
You cannot request priority by phone, chat or email.
