You can find information about your residence in the letter you received from UDI or the police. It also says whether your residence permit forms the basis for a permanent residence permit.

When should I apply?

You should apply three months before you meet the residence requirement or before your permit expires.

Applications for a permanent residence permit are usually processed by the police. If you apply earlier than three months, the police may send your application to UDI.

Waiting times at the police (external website) are shorter than waiting times at UDI.

If you cannot get an appointment in time

If you do not have an appointment before your residence permit expires, but you have submitted your application electronically and paid the fee at least 37 days before, you keep your rights and can document that you have legal residence.
