Information for those who have applied for residence permit renewal

In the period from 1 May 2026 to 1 September 2026, we will be processing applications submitted up to 1 February 2025. This means that these applications will be assigned to a case officer at UDI by 1 September 2026. The time it then takes for UDI to reach a decision in your case will depend on whether any additional investigations are required.

Renewals that affect children under the age of 18 are given priority. This includes renewals for children, renewals for spouses/registered partners/cohabitants with joint or separate children, as well as renewals in access cases (applications on a new basis). In the period from 1 May 2026 to 1 September 2026, we will be processing such applications for renewal that have been submitted up to and including 1 March 2026.

If UDI has to do or has done additional investigations

The waiting times for the police or the embassy to conduct an interview, take DNA samples or carry out other investigations vary from place to place. You can find information about waiting times at the police on the police's website (external website) and about waiting times at the embassy on the various embassies' websites (external website). UDI cannot answer how long you will have to wait for additional investigations to be carried out at the police or at the embassy.

If you or the reference person has been interviewed by the police or the embassy, we aim to process the application within 4 months from the date we received the application back from the police or the embassy.
