If you have new documentation which is important for your application, you can send it to the UDI, for example
Once your application has been considered, you will receive a letter in the post. If you have authorised someone to represent you in connection with your case, or if you have a lawyer, this person will be notified and must then inform you.
Most people will receive an answer within 4 months of submitting their application to the police.
We must first process your application for a residence permit, see case processing times for the type of residence permit you have applied for. The application for a travel document will be processed within a few weeks of you being granted a residence permit, if relevant.
If you are an asylum seeker, you do not need to apply for an immigrant's passport or travel document. If your application for protection is granted, we will automatically assess whether you will be granted an immigrant's passport or travel document without you having to apply for it.
We must decide whether you can be granted a residence permit as a refugee. If you are, you will also get a travel document for refugees. Such applications can take longer to process than for those who only apply for a travel document. Most cases will be processed within 6 months, but some cases may also take longer. The case may take longer to process if we are waiting for documentation. The case may also take longer to process if your family member with refugee status has a case in processing. This is because your family member must have a valid residence permit before we can consider if you can get a residence permit as a refugee. The case processing time depends on how many cases we have.
In some cases, we need more information or documentation, or there may be things that we want to look into more closely. We would not do so if we did not believe that it is absolutely necessary in order to make a correct decision in the case.
Within 4 months of the UDI receiving your appeal, we will either reverse the decision and grant you an immigrant's passport or travel document, or send your case to the Immigration Appeals Board for consideration of the appeal.
If we forward your appeal to UNE, you will be notified by email or SMS. You can find information on UNE’s website about how long it takes from UNE receives your appeal, until you receive an answer from them (external website).
