Child under the age of 18
Please note! If the child is born in Norway, please check what type of residence permit you should apply for. There might be several options.
Requirements for a permanent residence permit
- You must have lived continuously in Norway for the past three or five years, or qualify for an exemption.
- You must have held residence permits that form the basis for a permanent residence permit, and have met the requirements for those permits throughout the entire period.
- If you are 16 years or older, you may be required to attend courses and/or pass the tests in Norwegian language and social studies, or be granted an exemption by the municipality.
If you have been convicted of a criminal offence or sentenced to compulsory psychiatric treatment or care, you may have to wait longer before being granted permanent residence.
If you do not meet the requirements, you should wait to apply for a permanent residence permit. You can apply to renew your current residence permit until you meet the requirements.
