If you have been i Norway for at least five years, you who are a family member of an EU/EEA national can apply for permanent right of residence. This entitles you to stay and work in Norway indefinitely.

From 1 September 2025, all requirements must be met when UDI or the police decide on your application.

If you can document that you are qualified as a skilled worker, you can hand in your application for a residence permit to the police in Norway.

Once you have turned 18, you are responsible for ensuring that you have a valid residence permit in Norway and you can decide on your own if you would like to apply for Norwegian citizenship.

If you have been convicted or fined by the police or if you are under investigation for a criminal offence, you have to wait longer to be granted a permanent residence permit in Norway.

After you have handed in your application for a residence permit as an au pair, you must wait for an answer before you can move in with your host family.

With a permanent right to reside, you can stay and work in Norway indefinitely if you are an EU/EEA national or a family member of an EU/EEA national. You also have extra protection against expulsion.
