Want to apply Assisted return

If you are staying in Norway without a legal residence permit, you must return to your home country or another country where you have a residence permit. You can apply for support to return home and start a new life. This is called assisted return.

The information on this page is personalised for

You are returning to:

Syrian Arab Republic

If you have applied for protection and your application is being processed or has been rejected, you can apply for assisted return

  • If your application for assisted return is approved, your journey will be arranged for you.
  • If your return is organised through the International Organization for Migration (IOM) (external website), IOM will arrange your travel, and the financial grant will be paid to you in your home country after you have returned.
  • If your return is organised by the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) and IOM is not involved, the grant will be paid to you at Oslo Airport Gardermoen on the day of departure.

You can find information about how and where the grant will be paid in the decision letter regarding assisted return.

Travel document

  • If you have a valid travel document, either in your possession or held by the police, UDI can help arrange your journey. If you are unsure whether you have a valid travel document, you can contact us.
  • If you do not have a valid travel document, you may still apply for assisted return, and we will try to help you.

If your application is granted, we will ask you to send us an authorisation allowing us to send copies of your documents to the Syrian Embassy. The embassy needs these documents to issue a travel document for you.

The Syrian Embassy will also want to speak with you to ensure that your return is voluntary. Therefore, you must also provide us with a telephone number where they can reach you.

Residence permit in another country

If you have a valid, renewable residence permit in a country other than Syria, and it is valid for at least another six months, you may apply for assisted return to that country. The country must be part of the assisted return scheme. Each application is assessed individually, and not everyone are granted assisted return.
