Travel document (passport, immigrant's passport and refugee travel document)

A travel document is proof that you can cross national borders, and is normally a passport.

Norwegian passport

If you have become a Norwegian citizen, you can be issued an ordinary Norwegian passport. You do not get a Norwegian passport automatically when you become a Norwegian citizen. You must apply for a Norwegian passport.

The passport is red.

National ID card

If you have become a Norwegian citizen, you can apply for a national ID card. It is possible to get the national ID card with the right to travel so that you can also use it as a travel document (in the same way as a passport) when traveling to the EU / EEA countries and Switzerland.

Refugee travel document

If you came to Norway as an asylum seeker or resettlement refugee and have been granted protection (asylum), you can apply for a refugee travel document.

  • The new refugee travel document issued from and including 19 October 2020 is blue.
  • The refugee travel document issued before 19 October 2020 is green.

Refugee travel documents issued before 19 October 2020 are still valid until the expiry date.

Immigrant’s passport

If you hold a residence permit in Norway and it is not possible for you to obtain a passport from your home country, you can apply for an ordinary Norwegian immigrant's passport.

The immigrant's passport is normally valid for several years. You must apply to get an immigrant´s passport

You can use it as an ordinary passport to travel into and out of Norway, but you cannot use it to visit your home country.

  • The new immigration passport issued from including 19 October 2020 is gray.
  • Immigration passports issued before 19 October 2020 are blue.

Immigration passports issued before 19 October 2020 are still valid until the expiry date.

Immigrant’s passport for a single journey

If you hold a residence permit in Norway and you suddenly have to go on an important trip abroad, you can apply for a Norwegian immigrant's passport for a single journey.

It cannot be possible for you to obtain a passport from your home country in time for your journey.

The immigration passport for a single trip is blue or gray, depending on whether it was issued before or after 19 October 2020 (see above). It is stated in the passport whether you can use it for one or two trips.
