How to applyPlease note! If the child is born in Norway, please check what type of residence permit you should apply for. There might be several options.
Requirements for a permanent residence permit
- The child must be born in Norway.
- The parents must either:
- Have a permanent residence permit or Norwegian citizenship before the child turns one
- Meet the criteria for a permanent residence permit or Norwegian citizenship and apply for it at the police before the child turns one.
- The parents must be living in Norway.
- The parents must apply for a permanent residence permit for the child before the child turns one.
If you do not meet these requirements, please review the requirements for children under 18.

Requirements for a permanent residence permit
- You must have lived continuously in Norway for the past three or five years, or qualify for an exemption.
- You must have held residence permits that form the basis for a permanent residence permit, and have met the requirements for those permits throughout the entire period.
- If you are 16 years or older, you must have attended courses and/or passed the tests in Norwegian language and social studies, or have been granted an exemption by the municipality.
If you have been convicted of a criminal offence or sentenced to compulsory psychiatric treatment or care, you may have to wait longer before being granted permanent residence.
If you do not meet the requirements, you should wait to apply for a permanent residence permit. You can apply to renew your current residence permit until you meet the requirements.

How to applyYou must have a valid residence permit when applying for a permanent residence permit, and you must still meet the requirements of your current permit.
Requirements for a permanent residence permit
- You must pay an application fee.
- You must have lived continuously in Norway for the past three or five years, or qualify for an exemption.
- You must have held residence permits that form the basis for a permanent residence permit, and have met the requirements for those permits throughout the entire period.
- You must have had a total income of at least
NOK 325 400
in the past year. This must be your own income, unless you qualify for an exemption. - You must have attended courses and/or passed the tests in Norwegian language and social studies, or have been granted an exemption by the municipality.
