Register departure

Suppose your application for a residence permit has been rejected, or you have received a decision that you are expelled and registered in SIS. In that case, you are also obliged to leave Norway and/or the Schengen area and have a deadline to do so.

You are responsible for your departure being registered by the border control.

I am going to a country in the EU/EEA

  • If you have been given a duty to leave Norway and a deadline for leaving, you must ensure that your departure is registered when you travel out of Norway.
  • You register your departure by showing your travel document to the border control when leaving Norway.
  • If you do not register your departure, and you cannot document in any other way that you have left Norway by the deadline, there may be consequences for you if you re-enter Norway later.

I am going to a country outside the EU/EEA

  • If you have been given a duty to leave the Schengen area and a deadline for leaving, you must ensure that your departure is registered when you travel out of the Schengen area.
  • You register your departure by showing your travel document to the border control in the last country you are in when you leave the Schengen area.
  • After you register your departure, the SIS registration that you are expelled will be deleted.

Example: Your application for a residence permit has been rejected and you have been given a duty to leave the Schengen area with a deadline. You plan to travel from Norway to your home country with a stopover in the Netherlands. In this case, the Netherlands is the last country in Schengen and that is where you must register your departure. It is therefore important that you show your travel document to the border control when you leave the Netherlands.
