You cannot have two different residence permits in Norway at the same time

If you apply for a residence permit and are granted it, and you later apply for and are granted a residence permit on a different basis, the residence permit you already have is no longer valid from the time a new permit is granted.

Here you will find important information about the consequences of applications for a residence permit on a new basis when you already have a residence permit in Norway, or if you apply for a first-time residence permit on several grounds at the same time.

Family immigration

Do you have a family member living in Norway who you want to come and live with? If so, you may be eligible for applying for family immigration for

  • spouses, cohabitants and fiancés/fiancées
  • children and parents
  • other family members

Work immigration

If you wish to work in Norway, you need a residence permit. 

  • skilled workers
  • seasonal workers
  • those working in the arts
  • other kinds of work

Protection (asylum)

You can apply for protection (asylum) if you are persecuted or if you fear persecution or inhumane treatment in your home country.

If you wish to work while you are waiting for an answer to your application, you must apply for a permit. 

Residency according to the EU/EEA regulations

Are you an EU/EEA national or a family member of an EU/EEA national?

If so, you can:

Visits and holidays

If you are going to stay in Norway for up to 90 days, you must apply for a visitor visa.

Citizenship

Some people become Norwegian citizens when they are born. Others can apply for Norwegian citizenship.

Study permit

If you are to study at a university college/university/vocational school, or attend school, you can apply for a study permit.

Permanent residency

With a permanent residence permit, you can reside and work in Norway indefinitely. 

Returning home

Immigrant’s passport and travel document

If you hold a residence permit in Norway, you can apply for a Norwegian travel document for refugees or an immigrant's passport.

Lifting an entry ban

If you have been expelled from Norway, but you nevertheless wish to return, you can apply to have the entry ban lifted.

Residence permit for victims of abuse

If you have a family immigration permit and have been abused by your spouse or cohabitant, you can apply for an independent residence permit.
